A hidden society of vampires—and the humans they love—are at the heart of this opening novel in a biting, all-original series from the New York Times bestselling author of the Nightwalkers saga.
Rafe DaSilva is an energy vampire, soaking up nourishment from the sun—and, only when necessary, drawing sweet sustenance from humans who are pure in body and spirit. As the right-hand man to his queen, Rafe is a key player at a historic peace summit in New York City, which will unite the vampire nations against a common threat: the sycophants, who feed on humanity and kill indiscriminately. But Rafe’s fascination with a beautiful blond police detective may put everything at risk.
Detective Renee Holden has never worked a homicide quite like this. The victim has twin puncture wounds on his neck, and the only eyewitness swears she saw a vampire. Now’s definitely not the time to get distracted by a seductive stranger. But the suave, darkly austere, exotically handsome Rafe DaSilva is a hard man to deny, and as Renee falls under his spell, she also falls prey to his enemies. Desperate to protect her, Rafe lifts the veil on a shadow realm she can only visit—a world of intoxicating power, terrifying dangers, and forbidden pleasures.

I'm really at a loss with this one. I don't want to say I hated it, because I didn't. But it just didn't seem to be the authors best story telling. I've been a fan of Jacquelyn Franks other writings in particular her Night Walker Series but this book seemed to move slow for me. I feel it lacked any sense of humor, or real action. There was a lot of descriptions in the book but we never actually got to see those characters in action. Rafe was supposed to be a pretty awesome and kick butt guy (as well as some of the other characters introduced), yet we really didn't get to see it. The female lead, Renee was a pretty strong character and I enjoyed her determination and strength to remain who she was. She wasn't one of those that drive you nuts once she falls for a guy and seems to forget who they are. I really think if we got to see more of the characters personalities and capabilities more then I would of loved it. I know this is book one, and a lot of times the first book can be overly descriptive in order to let the readers know what they are getting into!
Now, what I did like about this book was that the author brought out a new take on vampires. Instead of the normal just good or bad, can't walk in daylight vamps, we got vampires whom don't drink blood and CAN walk in the daylight. As a matter of fact, they PREFER it! They are called E-Vamps! One's whom thrive off of energy and clean life. I absolutely see potential in this series because it's an amazing concept, so I will be reading the second book in the series whenever it does come out in hopes that we see more of our characters.
Don't count this series out! It is an amazing new concept with a fresh take on the paranormal world! There's a lot that can happen in books to come!
